Prayer
is the spiritual foundation for an effective church and outreach to the
world. Jesus told his disciples as recorded in Luke 10:2, "The
harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the
harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
And once the
workers went into the fields, Paul asks for prayer, “Pray also for
me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will
fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel [Ephesians 6:20]”,
“And pray for us, too, that God
may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of
Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly,
as I should [Colossians 4:4].”
Paul also set the example in praying
for other church people regarding their witness, “pray that you may be
active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding
of every good thing we have in Christ [Philemon 1:6].” Again in Luke
18:1, “Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they
should always pray and not give up.”
Prayer is also
for our spiritual growth. Colossians 1:9-10, “For this reason, since
the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and
asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all
spiritual wisdom
and
understanding. And we pray this in order that you may live a life
worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in
every good work, growing in the knowledge of God.” |
